Last night, Democrats won BIG in elections around the country from battleground states like Virginia to red states like Ohio and Kentucky.

We Democrats aren’t great at celebrating the wins (I think our natural resting state is nervousness at all times), so I just want us to take a second to appreciate how exciting this is!

Our celebrations include taking control of both the House and Senate in Virginia, enshrining abortion rights into the Ohio state constitution, and winning a Governor’s race in Mitch McConnell’s home state of Kentucky.

Now here are some of my biggest takeaways from last night:

The issue of abortion clearly remains a huge motivator for Democrats, Independents, and even Republicans who don’t want the government to dictate women’s bodies. In places where abortion is on the ballot, Democrats are winning. Heading into 2024, we need to be vocal about opposing extreme Republicans who want to ban abortion.

Local politics matter. In Kentucky, Democrat Andy Beshear defeated a GOP candidate who was considered a “rising star” in the Republican Party. He actually reminds me a lot of my opponent. Andy Beshear won because he built a brand voters knew they could trust. That’s exactly what we have to do in our tight race next year.

Ground game wins elections. Not only did Democrats outspend Republicans in these races, but we also had a much better ground game. By investing in field organizing, early voting, and new voter registration, we can increase turnout between now and March’s election.

Look, John. No doubt last night was a huge victory for Democrats, and at the same time we can’t take our eyes off the prize. Donald Trump is still leading in the polls and Republicans are actively trying to enact a national abortion ban. We have to win races like mine to stop both.
