Voters sent a powerful message to the country last night: if you come for our fundamental freedoms, we will fight back and we will win. Last night’s victories will have a huge impact on the future of voting rights, abortion rights, and democracy in this country.

Abortion access was literally on the ballot in Ohio. 56% of voters approved a measure to enshrine abortion access into the state’s constitution, but only after the Stand Up America community helped defeat an insidious attempt by anti-abortion groups this summer to raise the threshold to pass ballot proposals to 60%

In Pennsylvania, the Commonwealth elected Judge Daniel McCaffrey to the State Supreme Court, beating a billionaire-backed MAGA challenger who attacked vote-by-mail and questioned the 2020 election results. This was a big win for protecting our democracy in 2024 and beyond. Our Pennsylvania members turned out in droves for McCaffery, and our volunteers texted key voters across the state.

And in Virginia, where Stand Up America members sent over 39,000 letters to unlikely voters, MAGA Governor Glenn Youngkin’s dreams of consolidating power with a legislative trifecta were dashed.   

These are huge wins for democracy, not just in those states, but throughout the country, and they help build a firewall for our democracy heading into 2024.  

If these elections weren’t important, right-wing extremists wouldn’t be trying so hard to win them. 

2024 is only going to be more contentious. That’s why Stand Up America’s nearly 2 million members will continue to mobilize at the local, state, and federal levels to ensure democracy defenders are elected up and down the ballot. 

Last night’s victories can be replicated, but only if we all do our part. With less than a year to go, take the pledge to vote and fight back against MAGA extremism next year. And we’ll make sure to help you reach voters in key states so we can protect our fundamental freedoms.
