Ohio
In Ohio, voters turned out to protect abortion access, defeating the GOP ideologues looking to curtail reproductive freedom and push a dangerous abortion ban in the state. This marks the seventh time abortion has been on the ballot since the Dobbs decision, and the seventh time abortion access has won. Voters continue to prove that they will show up to the polls when reproductive freedom is threatened.
While we’re still calculating final voter contact totals from our local groups, I’m thrilled to share that Swing Left volunteers stepped up big to organize in-state and across the country to get out the vote for the Issue 1 special election in August and the general election this November. Volunteers knocked on more than 70,500 doors, made more than 160,000 calls, helped write nearly 350,000 Vote Forward letters to young women voters along with partners, and provided critical donations to the Ohio Democratic Party and Ohioans for Reproductive Freedom PAC.

As we head into 2024, this win also provides necessary in-state organizing infrastructure and critical momentum to regain a federal trifecta with the reelections of our current Ohio target candidates in must-win races: Sen. Sherrod Brown, Rep. Greg Landsman (OH-01), and Rep. Emilia Sykes (OH-13).
Virginia
In Virginia, Democrats held on to their state Senate majority and won back a majority in the House of Delegates, strengthening the Democratic check on GOP Governor Glenn Youngkin’s dangerous agenda. Voters made it clear that the Virginia GOP’s hateful legislative priorities—banning abortion, gutting public education, stripping away LGBTQ+ rights, rolling back progress on environmental protections, and weakening gun laws—have no place in the commonwealth.
Swing Left’s community—including dozens of college students on two bus trips from D.C.—knocked on more than 29,000 doors, made more than 41,500 calls, helped write more than 487,000 Vote Forward letters to voters along with partners, and donated more than $327,000 to key candidates, CASA in Action, and New Virginia Majority.

These races in Ohio and Virginia were a testing ground for the GOP’s plans for 2024 and beyond, and these important defeats send a clear message to Republican lawmakers and candidates nationwide: when they try to take away our rights, our freedoms, and destroy our democracy, we will keep showing up—election after election—to defeat them and their radical agenda.
