The King’s Speech is meant to be an opportunity for a Prime Minister to set out their stall for Government.

Rishi Sunak’s first (and hopefully last) attempt at this yesterday though was simply to promise action on issues which have worsened under his Government...and with little to no time to fix them.

What it said

"My Government will deliver its plans to cut waiting lists and transform the long-term workforce of the National Health Service."

The reality

Since the Conservatives took over in 2010, the number of people waiting for treatments has grown from 2.6 million to 7.75 million, an all-time high.

What we're doing

Our Can't Wait campaign has been highlighting the pressures faced by NHS doctors, nurses and paramedics, as well as the devastating impact of the Government's action on crime, education and the cost of living.

What it said

“My Government will continue to lead action on tackling climate change and biodiversity loss, support developing countries with their energy transition, and hold other countries to their environmental commitments.”

The reality

By encouraging trade with more distant countries, weaponising ULEZ in recent by-elections, u-turning on key climate action pledges and granting new oil and gas licences, this Government has demonstrated that they are prioritising short term electoral gain over long term climate action.

What we're doing

As well as our long-standing campaign against removing palm oil tariffs, Best for Britain have recently partnered with Tomorrow's Forests to plant a tree for every supporter who joins from just £10 per month.

What it said

“My ministers will continue to negotiate trade agreements with dynamic economies, delivering jobs and growth in the United Kingdom.”

The reality

The Government has only made two new trade agreements since Brexit that have not simply been rollover agreements continuing the trading conditions we enjoyed while EU members.

What we're doing

Best for Britain are the secretariat for the UK Trade and Business Commission who this year produced a report on how the Government could support trade and business together, with some of these recommendations having been adopted already:

<[link removed]>Read our report recommendations <[link removed]>Despite thin promises in the King’s Speech, the fact is that under Sunak trade negotiations have stalled, climate action has been neutered and NHS waiting lists have only risen.

With any meaningful action impossible before the General Election, this Government is out of touch, out of ideas and out of time. This country can’t wait any longer for change and that’s why at the next election, Best for Britain is organising the most powerful tactical voting operation the nation has ever seen <[link removed]>.

Thank you for your continued support.

Best wishes,

Naomi
