Dear John,
I am confident you closely followed the election results last evening along with me and our team. By now you likely are aware we lost in Ohio. Voters overwhelmingly cast their ballot to enshrine abortion into the state constitution. This is a bitter pill, and there's no sugarcoating it. And while emotions of sadness, frustration, and confusion may rain over us, we should take heart from our experience as pro-life advocates. We must remember that, in American politics, justice always prevails.
In the more than 50 years since Americans United for Life was founded, we've seen incredible pro-life achievements such as the Congressional Hyde Amendment, life-protecting victories in states from coast-to-coast, and, of course, the reversal of Roe v. Wade. At the same time, we've lived through significant disappointments, like the failure in the 1980s to enact a federal constitutional amendment to protect life and the tragic outcome of the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision. What we've seen as advocates for life over so many years is that, despite the bitterness of occasional political setbacks, American history remains the story of a people's pilgrim journey on the path toward constitutional justice.
You and I know that constitutional justice, always and everywhere, means equal protection for all. We will continue, as we have since our founding in 1971, to strive for the day when all are welcomed throughout life and protected in law. Let us continue to stand together in this mission.
Together, we will win.
Onward,
