There’s a new Speaker of the House, John.
After three weeks and several nominees, House Republicans elected Mike Johnson as Speaker. Unfortunately, their choice in Speaker does not give me much hope that the GOP will change the way they have been operating -- or more accurately, not operating.
Johnson is a MAGA extremist who led Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election. He opposes gay rights and voted against marriage equality for same-sex and interracial couples. He supports a national abortion ban, has questioned climate science, and has a 92% rating from the NRA.
As we approach the November 17th deadline for funding the government, it worries me that Johnson voted against the continuing resolution that kept the government funded and running at the end of last September.
A government shutdown would hurt so many, like the millions of mothers and children whose food assistance benefits would be at risk and millions of federal employees -- including active-duty military -- who wouldn’t receive paychecks.
Democrats are fulfilling our responsibilities to the American people. That’s the leadership we need: focused on addressing the issues that really matter, like affordable health care and creating jobs -- not botched partisan games.
The stakes for winning back the House next year are high, and we’re less than a year out from Election Day. We need to keep up our momentum from now through next November, and that’s why I’m so grateful to be able to count on your support for our efforts, including the generous contributions you made last month.
Thank you again for all you do,
Jim
