1) EV Prices Being Slashed Because of Slow Sales
Here from the WSJ is our quote of the day, and you can’t say we didn’t tell you so:
“As sales growth has slowed for battery-powered models, automakers and dealers are slashing prices and piling on discounts to clear out unsold inventory.
Some automakers, such as Hyundai Motor and Ford Motor, are this month offering cash rebates as high as $7,500 on some models. Others are resorting to aggressive lease deals that offer cheaper monthly payments or shorter contract lengths to attract buyers. Many car companies are offering low-interest rate promotions in an attempt to make pricey EVs more affordable. Dealers say part of the problem is that a wealthier group of early EV adopters have already purchased a vehicle. Now, the industry is confronting a more reticent group of consumers, who are already being squeezed by high interest rates and rising costs.”
Will someone PLEASE buy these EVs?
Here is our question: how are Ford and GM going to stay in business when they are already losing thousands of dollars for every EV produced and sold. Now they have to sell them at a deeper loss? Meanwhile, they have just given big raises to the United Auto Workers union.
Smells to us like yet another multi-billion dollar taxpayer bailout of the auto industry is coming our way.

2) Economic Activity Is Plummeting in Blue Cities
We all know that central business districts (CBDs) of big cities have been particularly hard hit by the double-whammy of resurgent crime and a post-pandemic continuation of working from home, which has reduced both downtown employment and related commerce, such as restaurants.
Now the University of Toronto's new “Downtown Recovery Rankings” makes clear just how much less foot traffic there is today than before the pandemic. If these data are correct, then these downtowns have lost 30 to 40% of their daily visitors and workers. This is devastating for stores, restaurants, street vendors, and other small businesses.
Without major policy changes to address rising crime, higher taxes, and stifling regulations, these cities are going to struggle to bring back much more of their pre-COVID traffic.
According to the Downtown Recovery Ratings, New York’s CBD has had a 34% reduction in foot traffic, Chicago 39%, San Francisco and Philadelphia 33%, Washington 32%, Boston 30%, Seattle 43% and Minneapolis 44%.

3) In Illinois, It's the Kids vs. A Union Boss Who Might Live Out of State
Our friends at the Illinois Policy Institute broke the story that CTU president Stacy Davis Gates – the leading lobbyist for killing the Illinois "Invest in Kids" scholarship program and kicking thousands of poor kids out of private schools – claims a dubious homestead deduction on a house she owns in Indiana.
[link removed]
We're not surprised that Gates is either lying about where she lives or is a hypocrite on "fair share" taxes, considering she sends her son to a private school and is paying her taxes in another state.
She’s also the loudest voice against school choice in the city of Chicago. What’s sad is that on education reform, Chicago and Illinois lawmakers listen to her, not the city’s parents (shown below).

4) Will Biden Drop Out Like Democrat Incumbent Presidents Truman and LBJ Did?
Democratic pundits, panicked by New York Times polls that show Joe Biden losing almost every swing state to Donald Trump, are desperately clutching at straws to explain how his failed presidency can rebound.
Walter Shapiro of the New Republic has taken on the unenviable task of explaining why Biden is not “Jimmy Carter 2.0.” He claims Carter’s woes “only have a cursory resemblance to the political winds buffeting Biden.” Carter’s real sin was he was “too honest about America’s problems” – neglecting to mention Carter had caused many of them.
[link removed]
Democrats have a habit of tossing their unpopular incumbent presidents overboard. That happened in 1952 when Harry Truman had low poll numbers going into the 1952 election. Unsure if voters would give him another term, Truman allowed his name to appear on the New Hampshire primary ballot.
The result was grim. As the incumbent president, Truman won only 44% of the vote against Tennessee Senator Estes Kefauver. Eighteen days later, Truman dropped out of the race. Lyndon Johnson did the same thing after he performed poorly against Eugene McCarthy in the 1968 New Hampshire primary.
Carter was a weak incumbent too. He narrowly survived a brutal primary challenge from Ted Kennedy and then proceeded to lose in a blowout to Reagan in November of 1980.
We think there is a good chance that Biden will bow out gracefully in the months ahead, or he will be pushed off the train by Democrat powerbrokers.
Failed Democrat Presidents Truman, Johnson, Carter, and Biden:

5) Florida Versus California on Homelessness
In preparation for the debate later this month between governors Gavin Newsom of California and Ron DeSantis of Florida, we add to our continuing comparisons of the California calamity and the Florida prosperity.
This chart shows that while in California homelessness is up by almost 50%, it is down by nearly that same amount in Florida. Which state is more compassionate?
