We did it, John!
Tonight, voters in Virginia flipped the House of Delegates and defended the Democratic majority in the State Senate, ensuring the Commonwealth will remain the last safe haven for people seeking an abortion in the South. And, a few states over in Ohio, voters passed Issue 1 – enshrining abortion access in their state’s constitution.
Voters across the country have spoken loud and clear: overturning Roe was unacceptable, and we will not allow far-right extremism to win in 2024.
John, I am here in Virginia with the Sister District team as we speak, and I am incredibly proud that this is our fourth election in the Commonwealth. I know that so many of you have worked alongside us since the beginning, so these wins are your wins. Your phone calls, your postcards, your donations, and your events made the difference.
Next year, we CAN protect abortion and keep MAGA Republicans out of our state houses. But it will take all of us, and it starts now. Please donate $20.24 and help us keep the momentum going straight into 2024!!
So far, our 2023 winning candidates are:
- Lashresce Aird - SD 13
- Schuyler VanValkenburg - SD 16
- Danica Roem - SD 30
- Russet Perry - SD 31
- Amy Laufer - HD 55
- Joshua Cole - HD 65
- Phil Hernandez - HD 94
- Michael Feggans - HD 97
One race, Susanna Gibson in HD 57, is still too close to call.
Tonight’s results are proof of what we can do when we work together, year after year. Across four cycles in Virginia, the Sister District community has raised more than $2.3M directly for our candidates and partner organizations, and reached out to more than 1.8M voters. And our political staff have been in the trenches, collaborating with our candidates to run stellar campaigns.
While this election is an important milestone, it’s not the finish line. We remain laser-focused on building power in key states every year this decade so that we can be in the strongest position possible for redistricting in 2031. Next year, we have our eyes on critical battlegrounds like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
But tonight, we celebrate. From the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of my co-founders Gaby, Lyzz, and the entire Sister District team: thank you.
