Subject: My 2021 Budget:
Friend,
I just released my latest budget proposal for the City of Richmond, and I wanted to share some of the details with you. This budget represents our continued commitment to improving basic city services while also investing in communities that have been left behind for generations.
We plan to invest:
- $16 million to fund the next phase of the RPS Strategic Plan -- I'm so proud of the work we have done so far to make Richmond Public Schools better for our kids. With this investment, my administration will have provided over $40 million in new monies to our school system since I first took office, representing the biggest investment in RPS in decades.
- $32 million for paving streets and sidewalks -- In my first three years in office, our Department of Public Works has filled over 80,000 potholes, repaired nearly 3,000 alleyways, and fixed over 3,200 sidewalks. But there is still plenty of work to be done. This investment represents a more than 1,000 percent increase since my first year in office.
- $686,000 for the Eviction Diversion program -- One of our greatest accomplishments has been starting Virginia's first-ever eviction diversion program. In the program’s first eight months, we have helped over 120 people facing eviction. More money in this program will allow us to help more families. Housing is a right, not a privilege -- which is why I plan to continue to invest in this vital program as well as invest $3.5 million for the Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
- $150,000 for Richmond's first-ever DOULA Fund -- A large portion of pregnant women of color experience adverse treatment or interactions with healthcare professionals, and evidence shows the presence of a doula can help with the health of these mothers and their babies as they navigate pregnancy and childbirth. That is why we are proud to partner with Richmond City Health District to provide $150,000 for the creation of a DOULA fund to provide care and expand access for these women.
I’m excited about our future, and I hope you are too. This budget will allow us to continue working toward our goal of building One Richmond.
Thank you,
Levar
