Hey -- it’s David Hogg, gun safety advocate and co-founder of March For Our Lives.
The Harvard Kennedy School director of polling just published a New York Times oped about the youth vote in 2024 that should scare (and motivate) us all:
The latest battleground state polls by The New York Times and Siena College show Mr. Biden holding a one-point lead over Mr. Trump among registered voters under 30 and a six-point lead among likely voters in the same age category. In 2020, exit polls showed Mr. Biden winning the youth vote cohort, 60 to 36 percent.
The oped identified a "vexing challenge" for Democrats of "connecting with a young, diverse electorate."
We have a solution: To connect with young voters, let's run more young candidates for office! It's why we launched Leaders We Deserve -- a grassroots organization dedicated to electing young leaders to Congress and state legislatures. This will increase voter turnout up-ballot for all Democrats and help to defeat fascism.
I’ll be blunt: There is no shortage of people who want us to fail. And unless we band together and fight back, nothing is going to change.
It’s part of why despite making up 45% of the electorate, Gen Z and Millennials only hold 21% of State Legislature seats.
Special interest groups, far-right extremists, and those hoarding the power are so determined to maintain the status quo that they will spend millions to keep Gen Z candidates from winning. They think that they can continue to manipulate the system to keep us out of elected office.
If they succeed, voter turnout will be lower in 2024 and we could lose democracy.
