John,

The Trump administration has proposed eliminating funding for a federal program that provides scholarships for Native American college students.

Choosing to cut this funding is an outrage.

Young people, especially Native Americans, already face too many challenges in obtaining a college degree. And barriers to education only perpetuate the systemic inequality people of color face in our country to this day. It’s clear our entire education system needs massive structural change.

That’s why instead of hoping every year that we get a budget that provides funding for some students, we need to fully fund public education from pre-K through college for all students.

Publicly funded education isn’t a “pie in the sky” idea like some politicians tell you. For many of the same politicians, college was nearly tuition free. In 1969, annual college tuition in Arizona was about $270. It took one month to earn that in a minimum wage job back then. We can and should do what so many countries have done and what this country once believed in: that education is an investment in our communities and our collective well being.

This is really a question of our priorities as a country.

Do we believe we are all better off when everybody can access education without the worry of college debt? I know I do. That’s why we must stop this administration from cutting important funding and elect people who will fight for meaningful education reform that puts people first.

I’m the only candidate in the race for Arizona’s First District who supports fully publicly funded pre-K through college education. Help me get to Congress to fight for it.
