It’s barely been two weeks since Republicans elected Mike Johnson as
Speaker. But in that short amount of time, we’ve already gotten a clear
picture of exactly who he is.

As a lawyer, he worked for anti-choice groups fighting to strip away the
fundamental right to abortion care. After the Supreme Court obstructed the
will of the people by overturning Roe v. Wade, he celebrated. He then
advocated to criminalize doctors for providing life-saving care: “Perform
an abortion and get imprisoned at hard labor for 1-10 yrs & fined
$10K-$100K,” he tweeted. Time and time again, he has supported and
co-sponsored some of the most draconian nationwide abortion bans.

Following the 2020 presidential election, Johnson played a blatant,
reckless role in spreading misinformation. His actions emboldened the
violent white supremacists who attacked our democracy.
He even
tried to overturn the election results and silence the will of the people
by voting against certifying the 2020 election. Shameful.

On LGBTQ+ rights, Johnson is a sponsor of the federal “Don’t Say Gay” bill
that would bar schools from providing sex education or books that include
LGBTQ+ subjects. He voted against bipartisan legislation to codify
same-sex marriage and called these loving relationships “inherently
unnatural.”

Maya
Angelou said it best: “when someone shows you who they are, believe them
the first time.”

Mike Johnson’s record is disturbing, and his very presence in Congress is
a threat to our democracy. By giving him the Speaker’s gavel, House
Republicans have sent a clear message: this extremism is what their party
is all about. They will continue their assault on our most fundamental
rights if given the chance, and he will only perpetuate and accelerate the
cruelty, chaos, and confusion we have seen under this Republican majority.
We cannot let this happen.

No matter how far Mike Johnson leads the GOP down the path of extremism, I
remain squarely focused on fighting for life-saving policies that center
the people and protect our most vulnerable — the kind of bold change we
need to reverse the legacy of policy violence that Republicans leave in
their wake. But we have to work together to make it happen.
