Dear John,

I have some important and exciting information to share with you regarding the 2024 tax filing season, as well as news for Californians effected by natural disasters last year.

California Taxpayers can use a NEW IRS Tool to File Their Taxes Directly

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced earlier this year that it was developing a new, free e-filing tool similar to paid services like TurboTax. This tool is called Direct File and will be available for use in 13 states next year, including California! Starting in February next year, Californians will be able use the IRS’ Direct File program to file their state and federal tax returns in English or Spanish.

Though the software will not initially allow for itemized deductions, taxpayers will be able to deduct student loans and teachers’ expenses using the new tool.

Direct File will also allow for the processing of select tax credits like the Credit for Other Dependents, the Earned Income Tax Credit, and the Child Tax Credit

As the IRS continues to improve the new software, it is likely that more filing features will be added in the future.

The IRS announced that Californians will have the opportunity to test a free new Direct File program, instead of having to file taxes through a third-party like Turbo Tax. Would you use this new IRS Direct File Program?

Taking this survey will sign you up for future news and updates from my office.

Filing Deadline for 2022 Tax Returns Extended

Additionally, Californians should be aware that the deadline for filing their 2022 tax returns has been extended once more to November 16th due to winter storm damages. This new deadline applies to all counties apart from Lassen, Modoc, and Shasta counties, so residents of the 39th Congressional District should make use of extra time if needed.

As always, please stay in touch regarding issues that concern you and your family.

Sincerely,
