Good housing policy should serve everyone

Last week, I voted in support of Council President Gomez’s inclusionary housing ordinance to require more affordably-priced housing in new developments.
I also voted for the Morena and Balboa community plans to increase density and reduce parking requirements around transit hubs.
San Diego families need new housing, and I’m proud to serve on a City Council that is doing more to reduce housing costs and availability for new homeowners and renters than ever before.
These positive initiatives at the local level are very different from the legislation backed by corporate interests in Sacramento that would preempt local decision-making and impose a one-size-fits-all approach to local planning.

Sacramento legislation like SB330 ([link removed]) , which my opponent has supported, turn control of our neighborhoods over to out-of-town corporate real estate speculators.
“They” describe themselves as “YIMBYs” (Yes in My Backyard). More objective observers have called them “WIMBYs” (Wall Street in My Backyard).
"They" seek to exploit legitimate concerns about housing availability to reap windfall profits at the expense of local neighborhoods.
My commitment to every San Diegan is that I am never going to give away your power to participate in the future of your neighborhood by handing that power to Sacramento, Washington, or Wall Street.

I’ve been standing up to the corporate interests hiding bad policy behind politically convenient talking points. That hasn’t won me favors with the politics-as-usual crowd.
But, I’m running to work hard for people like you.
