Dear John,

Did you see Max’s recent email? I wanted to make sure you didn’t miss it. The newest Speaker of the House is already threatening the future of Social Security and Medicare with the promise of a “debt commission.”

So please, if you haven’t yet signed our Emergency Petition to Congress, take a moment to do it now. And if you have already signed it: Thank you. You’ve taken an important step in ensuring your views are heard at the highest levels of our government. Now please consider making a donation in whatever amount you can afford, so that we can continue our crucial work on Capitol Hill to protect Social Security and Medicare from GOP-proposed cuts and radical “reforms.”

Dear John,

Last week, Republicans elected U.S. Representative Mike Johnson (LA-04) as Speaker of the House, after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted by hardline Republicans. Unfortunately, like his predecessor, he is no friend of Social Security and Medicare.

In fact, he’s callously called for trillions of dollars in cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. As the former Chair of the powerful Republican Study Committee, then U.S. Representative Johnson put forward one budget proposal after another that shredded America’s social safety net programs by raising the retirement age and Medicare eligibility age, privatizing Social Security and Medicare, means testing benefits, slashing the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) and more.

And now, as the new Speaker of the House, he’ll have immense power to prioritize and push forward these dangerous proposals to slash seniors’ programs, under the guise of deficit reduction.

Please tell your members of Congress right now that you expect them to stand firm against any benefit cuts offered up by Speaker Johnson!

As one of his first items of business, Speaker Johnson is promising to create a “Debt Commission” that could have the power to fast-track devastating cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

That’s why I need you to sign my Emergency Petition to Congress. We must send a strong message to Speaker Johnson and all members of Congress that seniors will not stand for our earned benefits to be used as pawns in GOP hardliners’ efforts to slash government spending.

These are our earned benefits they’re talking about! And seniors cannot afford for Congress to go down the path of creating a Debt Commission tasked with cutting Social Security and Medicare.

Speaker Johnson has already made it clear he intends to use his newfound power to pursue radical cuts to seniors’ earned benefits. Please ensure your voice is heard before Speaker Johnson launches his callous campaign against seniors’ earned benefits. Sign our EMERGENCY PETITION today!

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
