Dear John,
Democracy is being bombarded by threats against our justice system, laws that restrict rights and liberties, flagrant efforts to undermine the rule of law, and public figures who do not hide their desire to tear at the fragile fabric of government. At such a time of grave danger, every voice for democracy matters.
In particular, the voice of lawyers is needed to protect the rule of law. Our executive director describes this challenge to the profession in an article for the Journal of the DuPage County Bar Association.

As she writes, what we face today is not normal; it is dangerous. Existential threats to our democratic freedoms cannot be solved by empty “whataboutism” questions that serve only to distract from the work required to bridge partisan divides and reverse the increased virulence we face.
We can retain our varied perspectives as long as we have a collective commitment to the principles of the Constitution. That is what this country needs from its lawyers.
LDAD calls upon the profession to recognize the urgency of this moment. There are many ways to make an important difference, starting with signing our Democracy Commitment and committing to taking the first steps to help.
Please join us in this effort. Help your community, your state, and your country. Every voice helps make a difference. Democracy needs you.
Signed,
The Board, Lawyers Defending American Democracy
