A year ago, Kroger announced their intention to acquire Albertsons for $24.6 billion. The transaction would combine the country’s two largest retail grocery chains, exacerbating consolidation in an industry that has seen a 30% reduction in stores since the 1990s. Workers could lose $300 million in annual wages, and the deal could create more food and pharmacy deserts, and businesses and producers throughout the food ecosystem will have reduced buying power.
After the announcement, a coalition of more than 100 organizations, representing workers, farmers, ranchers, and independent businesses, launched a campaign to stop the merger. The coalition members have also raised questions about the proposed C&S divestitures. The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) International Union also publicly opposes the transaction.
