Dear John,
You are part of an inspirational team of partners who have brought us to the brink of ending Guinea worm disease. When President Carter started this work almost 40 years ago, approximately 3.5 million people suffered each year.
Adults and children were debilitated for weeks while long worms exited through painful lesions. The disease threatened communities that struggled to find clean water and could least afford more hardship.
But as of the end of August, only six provisional cases have been reported in the entire world! |
Together, we have shown that when people in need are empowered with preventive education and simple tools like water filters, they can overcome some of the toughest afflictions.
John, now is our chance to end Guinea worm once and for all and eliminate several other diseases that prey upon the poor: ones that cause blindness, stunted growth, and in the case of malaria, death.
