Dear
John,
On Tuesday, December 5, the Kirk Center will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of Russell Kirk's landmark book, The Conservative Mind, with an event in Washington D.C. ([link removed]) featuring a fantastic panel of emerging conservative thinkers. I'm pleased to announce the moderator for the panel today: Michael Lucchese.

Michael is a visiting scholar at the Liberty Fund and a Krauthammer Fellow with the Tikvah Fund. Previously, he was a communications aide for U.S. Senator Ben Sasse. An alumnus of Hillsdale College and the Hudson Political Studies Program, his writing on national security, the conservative movement, and the American Founding has been published widely in National Review, The Washington Examiner, and other outlets. He is the founder and CEO of Pipe Creek Consulting, a communications firm based in Washington, D.C., and a rising star in our movement.
“Russell Kirk is a hero of the conservative movement. We need his wisdom now more than ever,” Michael notes. “With so much up for debate on the right today, it is important for us to return to the permanent things Dr. Kirk preserved and promoted throughout his career. The Conservative Mind, in particular, reminds us that we can be defenders of an ‘exalted freedom’ and the American Constitution. We can only find a new direction for the movement by returning to its roots.”

To start the conversation off, I'd like to share a quote from President Reagan's letter read at a Mayflower Hotel dinner in 1981: "Kirk has helped renew a generation's interest and knowledge of these 'true ideas,' these 'permanent things,' which are the underpinnings and the intellectual infrastructure of the conservative revival in our nation. He has guided Americans in finding the meanings of the political world around them and in dealing with the universal problems of the human experience. The values and ancient truths of our civilization have been the focus of his powerful intellect in such major works as The Conservative Mind and The Roots of American Order. . . .We look to the future with anticipation that his work will continue to exert a profound influence in the defense of our values and our cherished civilization."

During this upcoming panel, we will hear from young thinkers who are adapting the principles and wisdom Kirk articulated in their work and reaching their peers. I believe the time is ripe for bringing traditional conservatism to the foreground and I will be sharing more about that in the weeks to come.

Thanks for your continued support and prayers for the work of the Kirk Center. We hope to see you in D.C. next month.

Best regards,
Jeffrey O. Nelson, Ph.D.
Executive Director & CEO

P.S. Luke Sheahan, editor of the University Bookman, will be discussing The Soul of Civility with Alexandra Hudson next Tuesday, November 14. Hudson is the founder of Civic Renaissance, a 2020 Novak Journalism Fellow, and professor at the Indiana University Lilly School of Philanthropy. As George Nash has remarked, this is a book that needed to be written and "has the potential to influence public understanding of the compelling need for civil society in America."
