Dear Friends,
I hope this letter finds you well.
Marissa and I are honored to be serving as Event Chairs for the Bayou City Blessings in a Backpack bowl-a-thon called the Food Bowl. The event raises critical funds to help provide weekend food to over 2,300 students every Friday of the school year.
The one thing Marissa and I realized during our time in Spring Branch ISD is that when a student’s basic needs are not met, they cannot learn. We believe that all children deserve an equal chance at all the opportunities that our community, state, and nation offers. However, the playing field is not always equal.
Did you know that children who arrive at school well fed are much more successful in our schools? Sadly, the reverse is true as well. In Houston in particular, about 1 in 3 children are at risk of going hungry over the weekend. These children use their school meals as their main source of food, and when they are away from school on weekends or holidays, they are at risk of going hungry.
That is why Marissa and I support Bayou City Blessings in a Backpack. Bayou City Blessings is part of the national Blessings in a Backpack nonprofit and is an outreach ministry of our local Holy Spirit Episcopal Church. They work with the administration at eight SBISD and five HISD elementary schools to deliver weekend food to over 2,300 children every Friday of the school year. Each child receives a weekend bag of two proteins, two breakfasts, two fruits, and a snack to help stretch them until they get to school on Monday morning. And since these young scholars have eaten well over the weekend, they arrive at school fed, focused and ready to learn and grow into the next generation of Houstonians.
Bayou City Blessings’ annual fundraiser is coming up February 1st. Supporters are able to sponsor the event with a donation for a bowling team for friends or co-workers, and have a great time bowling while eating, drinking, and raising needed funds for Bayou City Blessings’ work. Individual tickets are available for purchase as well.
We hope you will join us in supporting Bayou City Blessings in a Backpack’s Food Bowl fundraiser. The event will be held at the fun Bowlero at 925 Bunker Hill on February 1, 2024. Get your team together now and help us knock down hunger among Houston’s children.
I have attached a letter about the event and a Sponsorship form. You can also register or join Marissa and I in committing to a Sponsorship by using the link below:
