Hi John,
Today’s King’s Speech has set out the government’s agenda for the next year – and it’s exactly the assault on climate action we’d feared.

The world is heading to the brink of climate collapse. And yet instead of a fast and fair transition away from fossil fuels, Rishi Sunak’s government is looking to expand North Sea oil and gas EVERY YEAR. This is of course music to the ears of climate wrecking fossil fuel companies, which continue to make astronomical profits while the planet keeps burning.

The climate crisis can be tackled. So could the cost of living crisis and deepening global inequality. They are all a result of political decisions in a global economy set up to allow extreme corporate power to rule over everything - all in the name of profit.

But I’m reaching out today, not to tell you how bad things are. Instead, I want to encourage you to take hope and action.

Because amongst headlines of dismay, there are also stories of resistance, people power and progress. Recently, we supported Ecuadorian activists' campaign to become the first country in the world to limit fossil fuel extraction through direct democracy. And after two years of campaigning, we have pushed even this government to announce a review of its membership of the climate-wrecking Energy Charter Treaty, which lets the fossil fuel industry sue for lost profits from the green transition.

There is one small thing you can do today to strengthen the fight back even further: become a member of Global Justice Now.

By signing up to a membership, you can amplify the pressure on decision-makers to hold giant corporations to account: to make them pay for the climate damage they are causing, or to change international trade laws so that they work in the interest of people and planet, not greedy corporations.

When you become a member of Global Justice Now with a direct debit of £5 per month or more, you can get your choice of a free book with your welcome pack, which we hope will inform and inspire you further to keep fighting for a better world.
