This week, the Senate and House of Representatives approved an emergency funding bill to combat the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). There’s a lot of uncertainty and a lot still unknown about the coronavirus. But one thing that’s very clear is that we can take steps now to combat the crisis. This new funding will help our federal and local government agencies prepare and bolster efforts already underway so we can fight the spread at every level of government. I know President Trump has been ready to sign this bill, and I’m glad Congress could act so quickly in a bipartisan way to get it to his desk.
I joined my colleague from Missouri, Sen. Roy Blunt, and all of the senators from the lower Missouri River basin states in introducing the Lower Missouri River Flood Prevention Program Act. The goal of this bill is to overhaul the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ process for managing water resource projects along the lower Missouri River system. I heard directly from Iowans across the state last year about how the historic flooding was having a devastating impact in their communities. It’s important that we learn from those experiences and do what we can to protect against and prevent future flooding. This bill will empower the Corps to work with stakeholders along the Lower Missouri River to more seamlessly implement projects through the study, design and construction phases.
President Donald Trump signed into law a bipartisan bill I cosponsored to address the shortage of agricultural inspectors who protect the nation’s food supply and agricultural industry at the border. We’ve seen how a variety of diseases can devastate agricultural communities around the world. Now is the time to be proactive. Additional agricultural inspectors and resources along our border will continue to make safety a top priority. This is great news for our farmers and consumers. President Trump said he would stand with our farmers and he has once again demonstrated that by signing this bill into law.
