Mike Johnson has been Speaker of the House for less than two weeks, and he’s just passed a second bill making major cuts to pro-climate funding.
This bill would cut funding to the Environmental Protection Agency by 40%! That’s in addition to the first bill he passed, which would make major cuts to clean energy programs in the Inflation Reduction Act.
This is no surprise, John: In his seven years in Congress, Mike Johnson has consistently voted against climate legislation, even denying a connection between carbon dioxide emissions and global warming. He’s a fossil fool backed by top campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry — and he couldn’t care less how his actions will affect everyday Americans.
Congresswoman and SEEC Vice-Chair Chellie Pingree said Mike Johnson’s new bill “debilitates America’s ability to address the climate crisis and hobbles the agencies within its jurisdiction.” She’s right. We need strong leaders in Washington to help us fight the climate crisis, not people like Mike Johnson.
It’s clear that having Mike Johnson as the Speaker of the House is bad for the environment and our fight against climate change, John. That’s why we’re asking for your support today.
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
