This week the Supreme Court heard arguments in one of the most consequential cases for women’s rights in recent history. The Louisiana case June Medical Services v. Russo once again reviews an unnecessary state law that requires doctors performing abortions to have hospital admitting privileges near their clinic, and could very well set the stage for the hollowing out of Roe v. Wade when a decision is handed down this summer.
On Super Tuesday, as the Democratic presidential candidates vied for women’s votes, women candidates across the country won their primaries. The Center for American Women in Politics wrote this week that, “Congressional representation of women in some states is destined to increase” in 2020.
Tomorrow—Sunday, March 8th—is International Women's Day. But this week, Afghan women—excluded from US-Taliban negotiations—face uncertain futures, their lives imperiled by the Trump administration’s so-called withdrawal deal with the Taliban. Plus, noting the slowing of progress towards women’s equality, a new UN report finds that nearly 90% of people around the world still hold some biases against women. And Laurie Adams, CEO of Women for Women International, exposes the global lack of funding for women’s equality initiatives.
