NEWS FROM POWER TO DECIDE

Get Ready to Shout #ThxBirthControl

This year the nation is saying #ThxBirthControl on Wednesday, November 15. Your voice, passion, and participation will help make this Thanks, Birth Control Day the best yet. Join the conversation across social media by using the hashtag #ThxBirthControl. To help you get ready we’ve updated our toolkit ([link removed]) with new graphics, interesting data, and suggested social language to make sharing your birth control love easy.

Special thanks to our sponsors, Bayer, the JPB Foundation, Plan B, DiPaola Foundation, and Mayne Pharma. Their contributions – and yours – make our work possible.

Join us on November 15! Together we can show everyone that affordable and accessible birth control is basic health care that everyone deserves access to.

Free Training on Foundations in Human-Centered Design

We are now offering a free, introductory training on human-centered design, also called design thinking. The training focuses on how it has been used to develop interventions to improve sexual and reproductive well-being. The training includes information about the human-centered design process, as well as tools and strategies that are used in human-centered design, and real stories of how this approach has been used in the sexual and reproductive health field. Begin the course today ([link removed]) !

Power Player

We’re committed to uplifting the many individuals championing reproductive well-being. This month’s Power Player is author Crystal Maldonado. Read her story ([link removed]) .

New Five-Year Award to Evaluate ‘Let’s Talk Birth Control’

Power to Decide was recently awarded a 5-year cooperative agreement from the Office of Population Affairs to rigorously evaluate Let’s Talk Birth Control, a contraceptive decision-support intervention. Let’s Talk includes three core components: a printed contraceptive decision aid with a QR code that links to the Method Explorer page ([link removed]) on Bedsider; the Bedsider Method Explorer, which includes digital information on the full range of contraceptive methods and a personalized method comparison feature; and an online training for providers on patient-centered contraceptive counseling.

To date, there are few proven short-duration, clinic-based interventions. Our evaluation of Let’s Talk has the potential to address this notable gap. We hope our evaluation will result in new evidence-based interventions to support adolescent sexual and reproductive health.
POLICY UPDATES

Federal Update

Congressional Appropriations Remain Uncertain

At the end of September, Congress passed, and President Biden signed, a continuing resolution (CR) – a stopgap measure to keep the government funded at current levels through November 17, 2023. While the House continues to advance bills with dramatic cuts and anti-reproductive health riders, the new deadline to finalize a year-long spending deal for fiscal year (FY) 2024 looms. Since funding levels and policies remain uncertain, now is the time to contact your representatives ([link removed]) and let them know they must fully fund programs like the Title X Program (Title X) and Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) Program that give everyone the power to decide, if, when, and under what circumstances to get pregnant.

#ThxBirthControl and Supporting the Right to Contraception Act

While House leadership remains uncertain, Congressional staff are continuing their work. It is important to make your voice heard amid the chaos. And, with #ThxBirthControl Day coming up on November 15, now is the time to urge your representatives ([link removed]) to support the Right to Contraception Act.

State Update

Looking Ahead to 2024

Pre-filing has begun in at least 15 states and will be available in 12 more states before the end of the year. This Fiscal Note resource ([link removed]) provides more background on prefiling bills and why it is beneficial for advocates to monitor these bills.

Ohioans to Vote on Abortion Rights

Ohioans will be voting ([link removed]) on “The Right to Reproductive Freedom with Protections for Health and Safety” on November 7, 2023. The ballot initiative would amend the state constitution to protect abortion rights.
THE POWER OF SUPPORTING

Wednesday, November 15, is Thanks, Birth Control Day ([link removed]) , and the beginning of our month-long #ThxBirthControl campaign. Birth control makes so many things possible, but did you know that more than 19 million women of reproductive age in the US live in contraceptive deserts? That’s why Power to Decide launched the Contraceptive Equity Initiative ([link removed].) to address barriers that leave these individuals without reasonable access to the full range of contraceptive methods.

Access to comprehensive contraceptive care ensures that everyone has the power to decide if, when, and under what circumstances to get pregnant and have a child. Support our work and be the reason another person can say Thanks, Birth Control.
