Dear John,

We haven’t officially met yet. That’s because I usually spend most of my time calling supporters, organizing events, coordinating with endorsers, implementing our ground game, and managing our ever-growing crew of volunteers and staff! But today, I wanted to take a little time to share my #CoriStory with you, because it’s important.

I believe in Cori Bush. I believe because she has the heart, soul and integrity we need in Congress. I learned about her activism during the Ferguson uprising, and still vividly remember sitting up for hours watching videos of her speaking. Even through a screen, I was moved to tears. At the time, I was a leader & board member of Brand New Congress, and we voted to bring her onto our inaugural national slate.

Later that year, I finally got the chance to meet Cori in person at one of our summits.

We sat in a room in Frankfurt, KY with present-day congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and discussed our visions for criminal justice reform, immigration reform, and the policies now known as the Green New Deal.

Perhaps more than anything else that pivotal year, joining Cori’s campaign in 2018 put everything in perspective on why I’m fighting for progressive change. While we were in St. Louis City & North St. Louis County, I learned firsthand about the community’s decline during fifty years of representation from the Clay family. Congress is broken, corporations are all too powerful, and our communities are suffering as a result.

I knew I had to step up this cycle and do everything I could to elect this nurse, mother, pastor and community activist for Missouri’s 1st. Now that we’re once again in an election year, Cori still amazes me everyday. As a national surrogate for Senator Bernie Sanders, she inspires thousands of people to vote for the progressive values we share. She’s not in this for herself; she’s in this for the people, and so am I.

If you’re anything like me, the political campaigns you care most about are those that speak to your values, not to the Washington elite.
