Dear John

Please note! We are in the formal “communications blackout” period, less than 90 days from the November general election. To comply with election law, we are restricted with what we can discuss in mass communications until Election Day. We will continue to keep our community updated but bear with us as we pare down and change content to comply with election law. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Older Adult Resources

Aging in place shouldn’t be something you need to worry about in New York City. To help our older neighbors, our office has compiled a list of resources and numbers to help older adults get what they need not just to survive in our City but to thrive. In addition to these resources, you can email our office at [email protected] or call us at 718-499-1090 for assistance.

Heights and Hills

Located in our district at 463A 7th Street (at 7th Avenue), the Park Slope Center for Successful Aging has served older adults in our community for over 50 years. Every year, they provide critical services to over 5000 older adults in 19 different communities in Brooklyn. Heights and Hills provides services for homebound seniors and caregiver support for families, as well as serves as a neighborhood hub for active older adults. If you, or someone you know, requires more intentional care, Heights and Hills also has active case managers with a talented staff ready to help.

Good Neighbors of Park Slope

Serving older neighbors at 544 8th Street for almost a decade now, Good Neighbors of Park Slope is a volunteer-run organization that helps seniors age in place. Good Neighbors offers social activities aimed at helping older adults build community with other seniors! They offer various social and cultural activities that allow individuals to expand their networks and support systems. They also offer community resources from City agencies and healthcare organizations and advocate for issues affecting the senior community. Check out their website or give them a call at 917-947-9121. We are grateful for their partnership with our office.

Community Bulletin

  • Our office is excited to release the online ideas map for Participatory Budgeting Cycle 13! Ideas collection lasts until 11/9, and we are looking for community members to share their ideas with us about how to make our neighborhoods stronger! Previously funded projects that community members submitted include the Repair Café at Big Reuse, PS 124’s Family Resource Center, and a restoration of the Bandshell Lawn. Submit your idea online today!

    • Also, be sure to submit your nomination for our Civic Assembly! The Civic Assembly is a group of community members who will come together to deliberate on which Participatory Budgeting project ideas will be developed for the ballot. Essentially, they will act as a jury to review all the submitted project ideas and help develop a list of community priorities. Nominate friends, family, and peers from your community who could help us develop our list of community priorities from the ideas submitted through Participatory Budgeting.

  • As Thanksgiving fast approaches, our friends at CHiPS are looking for donations to help provide a hearty Thanksgiving meal to those in need. Check out the list of needs, and please consider giving generously this holiday season!

  • Please join Heights and Hills as they honor National Caregiver Appreciation Month! These are challenging times, especially while navigating care for a loved one. This workshop will explore different methods to release, reset, and recharge. Sign up for a self-care workshop on either Tuesday, 11/14, from 6:30-7:30 PM or Wednesday, 11/15, from 12 - 1 PM.

  • The reconstruction of the dog run at Washington Park will start the week of 11/14! The project will take approximately one year to complete, and you can track the progress on the Parks website here.

  • Were you affected by the heavy rains in September? Join our office, Council Member Rita Joseph, and City agencies to hear how New York is preparing homes for flood mitigation. The event will be in person at PS 218 (1100 Newkirk Ave) from 6-8 PM on 11/14.

  • The Department of Transportation has proposed new rules for outdoor dining, and you can submit your feedback! You can submit your feedback online or attend the virtual hearing on 11/20 at 10 AM. Access the Zoom link here.
