John,
We live in a time where acceptance and understanding should be at the forefront, but sadly, there are groups like LibsOfTikTok that spread hate, using social media as a breeding ground for bigotry and a launching pad for real-world violence.
LibsOfTikTok disseminates virulent anti-LGBTQ+ propaganda, cloaking bigotry in the guise of political commentary. Their social media posts deride, mock, and dehumanize individuals based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression, creating an environment ripe for discrimination and harassment.
This group isn’t just about online trolling, their actions have led to real threats and violence, affecting many lives outside the digital world. In fact, they've been linked to potentially inciting 66 separate threat events, including terrifying bomb threats against LGBTQ+ supporters, occurring directly after one of their many hateful social media posts.
Thankfully, the social media platform TikTok recognized the danger and suspended LibsOfTikTok for breaking their rules against dangerous hate speech, misinformation and promotion of violence. The problem is they just moved to other social media sites and kept on going.
Now, it's time for Meta (Facebook, Instagram and Threads), Google (YouTube), and X (Twitter) to step up and do the same.
Call on the CEOs of Meta, Google, and X to show that there's no place for hate and violence on their platforms by dropping the dangerous anti-LGBTQ+ hate group LibsOfTikTok Now!
The perpetuation of hatred and bigotry by groups like LibsOfTikTok is a stark reminder of the darkness social media can spread. They fuel misinformation, perpetuating harmful stereotypes that stigmatize the LGBTQ+ community, and embolden individuals with prejudiced beliefs to act on their hatred.
Even Children’s Hospitals in Boston and Washington D.C. found themselves at the receiving end of violent threats and harassment following baseless claims disseminated by LibsOfTikTok.
It’s clear that LibsOfTikTok's actions show the profound damage of unfettered online hate and misinformation. It's time platforms take notice and take action against extremist groups that, under the guise of free speech, put innocent lives at risk.
The CEOs of Meta, Google, and X are at the helm of technological marvels that have redefined human interaction. The digital platforms they govern are not just tools of communication, they are reflections of society’s virtues and vices, and they have the potential to shape public discourse.
That’s why these platforms must be purged of dangerous groups spreading bigotry and hate.
Tell the CEOs of Meta, Google, and X that the world is watching, and it’s time to take a stand against hatred for a safer, more inclusive online environment for all.
Inaction by Meta, Google, and X is a stark betrayal of the trust and safety of millions of users worldwide. Let’s make sure they use their positions of power to curb the tide of online hatred.
