ACTION SPOTLIGHT
DEADLINE FAST APPROACHING: Protect the
Arctic Refuge from oil and gas drilling
The Biden administration just came out
with a new draft management plan for the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge — but the proposal doesn't go far enough to protect the
this cherished wildland from reckless oil and gas drilling.
The Arctic Refuge is home to birthing caribou and migratory birds
and provides a key denning ground for America's polar bears. The
Gwich'in people rely on lands in the Refuge for their
livelihoods. And blocking drilling there is critical to reducing
our dependence on dirty fossil fuels driving the climate crisis.
President Biden's Bureau of Land
Management is inviting public comments on its plan — but only for
the next two days.
Please make your voice heard before Nov. 7 in support of
stronger protections for the Arctic Refuge. ( [link removed] )

CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Tell President Biden: Protect the
Endangered Species Act!
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
recently announced that 21 endangered species — including eight
species of mussels and 10 bird species — have been removed from
the endangered species list due to extinction.
The unhappy announcement is a stark reminder of the worsening
biodiversity crisis. The landmark Endangered Species Act (ESA)
suffered devastating rollbacks under former President Trump.
These latest extinctions underscore why it's so critical that
imperiled species receive the ESA protections they desperately
need — before it's too late.
Send a message to President Biden and Interior Secretary Deb
Haaland to take HISTORIC strides to restore and protect the
Endangered Species Act. ( [link removed] )

BIG WINS
* EPA Cuts HFC Use in Air Conditioning,
Supermarket Refrigerators: Pound for pound, climate-warming
hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are one of the most potent sources of
climate pollution. The EPA has finalized standards that will
phase out most HFCs in key applications like aerosols, heat
pumps, supermarket refrigerators, and vehicle air conditioners.

* BIG WIN: Michigan Adopts Filter First Protections for Kids:
Michigan has enacted the nation's strongest protections against
lead in drinking water for kids at schools and childcare centers.
Soon every Michigan school and childcare center will be required
to proactively install lead-removing filters at all designated
drinking and cooking water outlets. Read more > ( [link removed] )
* Colorado Adopts Ambitious Clean Cars Plan, Could Secure Even
Greater Benefits: The Colorado Air Quality Control Commission has
adopted a Colorado Clean Cars plan that will ramp up sales of
clean electric vehicle sales so that more than 80 percent of new
vehicles will be zero-emission by 2032, which will reduce air
pollution, provide drivers with more clean vehicle options and
help address climate change. Read more > ( [link removed] )
STORYTELLER SPOTLIGHT
The long, long battle for the Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge
Before the creation of the Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge in 1980, conservationists fought for
many decades to protect the relatively untouched lands at the
northeastern edge of Alaska. Take a trip through history to learn
more about the place the Gwich'in people have called "the sacred
place where life begins," which now sits at the center of the
fight against more destructive, dirty oil drilling. Read more > ( [link removed] )
ACTION ROUNDUP
* Stand With Standing Rock: Demand a
Fair Environmental Review of the Dakota Access Pipeline: ( [link removed] ) Each day the pipeline continues to operate, it violates
Indigenous sovereignty and treaty rights, and poses a constant
threat to crucial water sources. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
rejects the recently released U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
environmental review — join the fight and submit your public
comment demanding a new, unbiased Environmental Impact Statement.

* Protect Health and Fight Climate Change with Cleaner Vehicles:
( [link removed] ) Transportation is the largest source of climate pollution in
the U.S. and a major source of other harmful pollutants that
significantly impact public health. New standards would help
combat the climate crisis, protect communities, and speed the
transition to all new vehicle sales being zero-emission by 2035.
