Michigan Thumb Area Gateway

This Tuesday November 7th, 2023 will be one of the most crucial elections ever to Lapeer County and ultimately the Thumb of Michigan. Folks heading north on M-24 will almost certainly pass through the city of Lapeer. The City of Lapeer is realistically the last major city before the Thumb opens up into large- and small-scale family farms that have been in some families for generations. The County of Lapeer sits in the most conservative district in the State and the 3rd most conservative district in the nation. To the South of Lapeer is our neighbors from Oakland County, with large city areas like Oxford, Lake Orion, Pontiac, Rochester Hills and ultimately Detroit. That is why I like to refer to the City of Lapeer as the Gateway to the Thumb.

This Tuesday, the residents of the City of Lapeer will be voting on 4 city commissioners’ seats. While this is technically a "non-partisan" race, many realize that the idea of non-partisan positions is a myth. Every American identifies with a certain political faction. I myself wish there was an alternative to political parties, and agree with the founders of this nation, that there are many downfalls to having parties and factions. However, for the sake of this argument, most Americans identify with either conservative values or liberal values.

The Lapeer County Republican Party, has voted to give monetary donations to 4 candidates who have expressed a more conservative approach leading the City of Lapeer. Two candidates have respectfully declined our donations, due to reasonable reasons, and we respect that.

While not technically "Republican Candidates", we have decided to support these candidates because the more conservative an elected official is, the more fiscally responsible they will be. Those candidates tend to care more about staying out of the way of small business owners and letting the free-market control the growth of the city. History tells us that government overreach is never a good thing, especially in the long run.

These four candidates have expressed conservative values, fiscal responsibility, and all-around great ideas to help lead the city. Many of you may not live in the city, but we are all affected by the City of Lapeer in some way.

We encourage you to support, City Commissioner Joshua Atwood, Melissa Petrie, Stefan Brady, and Linda Glisman. If you live in the City of Lapeer, please remember to get out and vote and defend the Gateway to the Thumb!

You may also vote today in person until 4:00 p.m. at Lapeer City Hall by filling out an absentee ballot and giving it to the clerks.

-Chairman Gabriel Lossing
