Indivisibles,

It’s been exactly one year since the House passed H.R.1, the For the
People Act -- a sweeping bill to expand voting access, get big money out
of politics, and tackle corruption in government. And since then, it’s
been languishing on Mitch McConnell’s desk.

Riding 2018’s historically diverse Blue Wave, the House passed this bill
because we desperately need a more responsive and inclusive democracy. But
that’s the opposite of what Mitch McConnell and Republicans in the Senate
want, because they know a healthier democracy will kick them right out of
power.

So, like hundreds of other pieces of progressive legislation, H.R.1 is
still sitting in the Senate’s legislative graveyard -- it hasn’t even gone
up for a vote.

If Senate Republicans won’t pass democracy reforms and give power back to
the people, we need to get them out. That’s exactly what the Payback
Project is about -- beating 10 of the worst GOP senators and electing true
progressive champions in their place. It’s a grassroots-funded effort, and
we need your help: [ [link removed] ]chip in $10 to take back the Senate and support all
our work this year.

So what are Republicans so afraid of that they won’t even bring this up
for a vote? H.R.1 is a robust package that focuses on three essential
reforms:

* Voter empowerment and access. The bill includes measures like
automatic voter registration, same-day registration, restoring the
Voting Rights Act, protecting against improper purging of voter rolls,
requiring states to upgrade and secure their election systems,
restoring voting rights to those with past criminal convictions,
providing adequate early voting opportunities, and preventing partisan
gerrymandering through independent redistricting commissions. H.R.1
helps ensure that everyone is included and represented in our
democracy and has unimpeded opportunities to participate.

* Money in politics. A constitutional amendment is needed to overturn
the chaos that Citizens United and related decisions unleashed into
our campaign finance system. H.R.1 starts that process immediately. It
also stems the tide of big money in our politics by amplifying
small-dollar donations through public financing, encouraging
small-dollar donations through tax incentives, eliminating “dark
money” by requiring disclosure of all political spending (including
online ads), cutting off cooperation between candidates and super
PACs, and empowering the Federal Election Commission to truly enforce
campaign finance law.

* Ethics and corruption. Trump and his cronies regularly engage in
self-dealing, corruption, and conflicts of interest, without a single
rebuke from the Republican-controlled Congress. H.R.1 cracks down by
making sure that ethics rules apply to all government officials --
including Trump. This means demanding disclosure of and divestment
from his financial interests that pose conflicts of interest, and then
the rest of the executive branch locking the “revolving door” of
lobbyists and government officials, prohibiting bribery, and demanding
full disclosure of information revealing potential and actual
conflicts of interest.

If you think about it, it’s not too surprising -- of course GOP senators
who won because of voter disenfranchisement and dark money don’t want this
bill to pass. Of course the party that held a sham “trial” to cover up
Trump’s crimes doesn’t want to improve ethics and stop corruption in
politics.

If you want to stop the GOP’s antics and push forward real reforms that
will help everyone, not just millionaires and billionaires, the best thing
you can do right now is get the Republicans out of office. Payback Project
is Indivisible’s plan to do just that. We’re running ads, contacting
hundreds of thousands of voters, and much more, and we can’t do any of it
without support from you. [ [link removed] ]Chip in $10 today to take back the Senate,
stop the GOP, and support all of Indivisible Action’s critical work.

The 10 senators we’re targeting with the Payback Project aren’t serious
about representing their constituents. All they care about is hoarding
power, enabling Trump, and destroying democratic norms. That’s why their
party opposes reforms like H.R.1.

Mitch McConnell called the For the People Act a “partisan power grab” and
vowed never to bring it up for a vote. John Cornyn called Senate
Republicans a “firewall” against the hundreds of progressive bills passed
by the House. And all 10 of these senators have worked again and again to
protect their president and block the progress that Americans are
demanding.

We are the grassroots movement that’s going to send them packing. We have
the strategy, we have the tactics, and most importantly, we have the
people. But we also need the funding to make it all possible. [ [link removed] ]That’s
why we’re asking today: please, make a $10 donation to fund the Payback
Project, take back the Senate, and support all Indivisible’s work this
year.

The freshman Democrats in the House have been doing what we elected them
to do -- working to expand and protect our rights. With your help, we can
make this the year when we take back the Senate to keep all that work
moving. Thanks for being here.

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
