John The numbers are alarming: There have been 6,000 book bans since July 2021, with a 33% increase in bans in the past year.Â
Driven by fanatical extremist groups like Moms For Liberty, the Proud Boys and other even smaller right-wing funded groups, these book bans aren’t about protecting children.Â
Senator Brian Schatz and Representative Jamie Raskin have introduced a bill to end book bans and protect the right to read. H. RES. 733 & S. RES. 372 will defend the rights of public schools and libraries to protect students, parents, and teachers from hateful right-wing extremists and encourage reading.
These bills are gaining support. The House version now has 52 co-sponsors and the Senate version is backed by 20 senators so far. We need to show that we agree! Please, sign on now to become a citizen sponsor of the resolution to defend the right to read now.
Here’s just a few of the classic, meaningful titles that are being banned by Republicans who want to censor diversity and history in our literature and classrooms:
- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
- Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
- The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
- Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
- The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank by Anne Frank
- The Color Purple by Alice Walker
- Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
- The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
- Looking for Alaska by John Green
- The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
Show Congress that they need to act now. Sign on today to protect literacy and become a citizen cosponsor of the resolution to defend the right to read.
