Republicans are seeking to cut $4 trillion over 10 years, but it’s not to address our country’s debt, as they claim.[2] A report from the Congressional Budget Office shows that these cuts to critical services are only meant to pay for more tax cuts for the rich and corporations.[3]

When Republicans want to cut popular programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, they hide behind commissions that can be run behind closed doors without input from the American people.
That’s why the so-called debt commission being discussed right now is so dangerous. And, it has the endorsement of the new, right-wing Speaker of the House.
To standing applause from his Republican colleagues, Rep. Mike Johnson in his first remarks as Speaker called for a debt commission saying that “tough decisions will have to be made.”[1] But, when Republicans talk about “tough decisions” they never include making the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share in taxes. They simply want to make cuts that harm working people and seniors.

If you want the Republican playbook on addressing our nation’s debt, look no further than House Budget Committee Chair Jodey Arrington’s budget. Arrington’s budget, released last month, seeks to cut $4 trillion over 10 years from services that regular Americans rely on―including $1.9 trillion in cuts to Medicaid, kicking millions of working people off of their healthcare.[2]
And, while Republicans claim these cuts are in the name of “fiscal responsibility,” they’re simultaneously moving ahead in that same budget to extend tax cuts for the rich and corporations, which the Congressional Budget Office calculates will cost $3.8 trillion (including extra interest) if the whole plan is made permanent.[2]
