John,

Rain replenishes our streams, rivers, and oceans. It supports plant growth. It sustains our interconnected ecosystems. Rain is part of the cultural identity of the Pacific Northwest. Up to 60% of our bodies are made of water. We all deserve clean water and access to the benefits it provides.

Over time, urban areas have disrupted this natural water cycle. Parking lots, sidewalks, and streets prevent rainwater from soaking into the ground. Stormwater rushes over these hard surfaces, picking up pollutants like oil, fertilizers, and heavy metals before entering our waterways. Like other forms of pollution, polluted stormwater disproportionately affects Tribes, communities of color, and low-income neighborhoods.

The Department of Ecology is reissuing the municipal stormwater permits that will set the standards for how stormwater is treated and controlled in our state for the next five years. The permits must accelerate the adoption of green stormwater infrastructure that captures, slows, and treats stormwater. They must prioritize investments in communities most affected by this kind of pollution. Spend just a few moments speaking up for clean water for you and your community!
