Failure of Competence and Confidence |
With each day, concerns that the outbreak of the new coronavirus—which causes the disease COVID-19—may become a pandemic are increasing, raising serious questions about how the U.S. government is currently responding to the threat. The broad-spectrum effects that COVID-19 could have on everything from the economy, supplies, and national security to health care workers, rural Americans, and the uninsured require an intensive and effective governmentwide response. Instead of assuring crowds that it will "work out fine" because the virus "will go away in April," President Donald Trump and the federal government should prioritize and integrate their response efforts with state and local governments, private industry, and international governments.
To educate the American people on the many implications of COVID-19, the experts at the Center for American Progress are rolling out a a new series—including an event with leading health experts—focusing on an appropriate government response to the threat as well as the various factors that must be considered, such as national security at home and abroad, health care access for rural Americans and the uninsured, the economy, infrastructure investments, and more.
