John,
Michael showed you this tweet yesterday, and I want to linger on one part:
“The idea was met with great enthusiasm.”
Republicans know that the only way they can slash Social Security and Medicare, without getting blamed for it, is by doing so behind closed doors. No wonder they’re enthusiastic about a so-called bipartisan commission.
We need to make sure that every Democrat in Congress rejects this commission, which the White House calls a “death panel for Medicare and Social Security.”1
We’ve beaten closed door commissions to cut Social Security and Medicare before, under presidents of both parties. Rush a donation to fight back against Speaker Mike Johnson’s commission to cut our earned benefits now.

-- MICHAEL'S EMAIL --
John,
This week, MAGA’s new Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has been meeting behind closed doors with Republican Senators to get on the same page about priorities in the new regime. There were plenty of areas of disagreement―but one piece of common ground was clear:
That’s right―Republicans held a closed-door meeting to plot a closed-door commission to destroy Social Security and Medicare.
Social Security Works is shining a light on these closed-door talks, and making sure every member of Congress knows that a vote for MAGA Mike Johnson’s commission is a vote to destroy Social Security and Medicare!
Remember: Speaker Mike Johnson used his acceptance speech after ascending to the speakership to pitch this closed-door scheme. It’s not a new idea―it’s been pitched in some form or another going back to the Great Recession, with adherents from Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney to Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell.
Of course, the only reason to have a special ‘commission’ is to do something the American people don’t want―and the people are overwhelmingly opposed to cutting Social Security and Medicare to protect tax breaks for the super-rich.1
The Biden White House has rightly called such a commission a “death panel for Medicare and Social Security.”2 But with the government set to shut down in just two weeks, Speaker Mike Johnson and his ilk see an opportunity to force a commission onto the American people.
We’ve stopped them before. And if we stand together, we can beat them again. Can you pitch in $7 for our sprint to BLOCK the Republican Social Security death panel?
Thank you,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
