Friend —
Tomorrow marks one year out from Election Day for our U.S. Senate race in Michigan. In that spirit, I wanted to take a moment today to share what our campaign has been up to so far, lay out the stakes of this race, and lay out a plan for defending this seat.
CAMPAIGNING ACROSS MICHIGAN
One of the things I LOVE about running for Senate is traveling the great state of Michigan. It's an opportunity to meet people face-to-face and engage them on the issues in turn. And so far, our campaign has visited 25 counties across the state.
Last month, I stopped by the UAW picket line to stand with workers striking for better wages and working conditions. Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Detroit casino workers have also gone on strike. It was great to see Michigan continuing to lead the way on pushing for the security of a middle class life. And just last week, UAW reached tentative agreements to win record pay increases for workers at the Big Three automakers.
Back in September, after a 3-year COVID hiatus, the big Labor Day parade returned to Detroit. The event was an important reminder that we are going through a once-in-a-generation moment for organized Labor. When we stand together, we can ensure that companies making record profits negotiate record contracts, particularly with workers having to stretch every dollar further.
ENDORSEMENTS FROM LOCAL LEADERS AND ELECTED OFFICIALS
Along the way, our campaign has received endorsements from more than 100 local and elected leaders. I am also honored to have the support of so many other leaders, including former Detroit Mayor David Bing, Congressman Jamie Raskin, State Senator Mallory McMorrow, Congresswoman Haley Stevens, Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter, State Senator Sarah Anthony, and other elected officials and local leaders from Oakland County, Wayne County, and mid-Michigan.
UNIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS
In addition to the 16 major unions that endorsed our campaign over the summer, we also earned the support of the Michigan Education Association and were able to spend some time with their members in Macomb County recently. We’ve also earned the support of EMILY’s List, End Citizens United/Let America Vote, Giffords PAC, VoteVets, Elect Democratic Women, and Foreign Policy for America.
THE STAKES OF THIS RACE
National Republicans recognize that their path to winning the White House and control of the Senate hinges on Michigan. It's why Donald Trump came to town in September to energize the Republican base and lay the groundwork for a tough Senate race in 2024. As of today, with a year left, we’ve had two serious Republican opponents enter the race: former Congressman Mike Rogers, former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, and we are hearing rumors that former Congressman Peter Meijer will also enter the race.
Given the competition, it will take a thoughtful strategy to reach voters through TV and digital ads, hire staff, and blanket the entire state with yard signs over the next year. Since I'm not accepting money from corporate PACs, that means our campaign needs to keep up a steady drumbeat through the response to emails like this one.
Here's why early investments matter: the donation you make today will allow us to be strategic and plan for the months ahead – like reserving airtime for TV advertising, digital advertising, stocking up on yard signs, bumper stickers, and campaign literature. In the spring, TV stations open up their ad time for the fall. So the earlier we make our reservations, the better inventory we get – aka the time slots where we’re guaranteed to get the most eyeballs.
Making an early contribution in honor of tomorrow being exactly a year to go is one of the best ways to make the greatest impact on this race. That’s why I would really love to earn your support:
