Friend -

With the headlines full of information on the coronavirus, I wanted to share a few additional items.

From day one, it has been a stark reminder that a deadly virus anywhere is a deadly threat everywhere - a warning that the U.S. response must not only address the current crisis, but also lead the way to prevent the next pandemic before it reaches our shores.

This is the topic of my latest op-ed in The Hill - A warning for the next pandemic. Let me know your thoughts.

In addition, here's a quick update on what happened on Capitol Hill this week as it relates to Washington's global response to the coronavirus:

* Congress quickly reached a bipartisan deal on an emergency funding package to combat the coronavirus at home and abroad, which includes essential funding for the State Department and USAID, including resources for embassy operations to help Americans, investments for global health systems, and humanitarian assistance.

* However, during the Senate debate yesterday, there was an effort to slash 15% of funds from the State Department and USAID to offset the emergency coronavirus package. Leading the charge against the cuts, both Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT) read a letter of opposition from the USGLC on the Senate floor during the debate. Glad we could help.

* The USGLC rallied the troops and - within hours - there was an overwhelming, bipartisan rejection of this dangerous proposal that was completely out of step with what is in the best interests of keeping Americans safe. It's still troubling that in the midst of the global coronavirus outbreak anyone would even question the need for America to engage in the world.

* Lastly, the week was full of Congressional committee activity with the House Foreign Affairs Committee passing the Global Health Security Act unanimously plus lots of hearings on Capitol Hill.

More soon. Stay safe and we'll keep you up to date from Washington.

Best,

Liz
