Aid to Israel

On October 7th, Hamas carried out an unprovoked terrorist attack on the people of Israel.

Thousands have been injured and killed since the initial attack, and over 200 people are still held hostage by Hamas. Last week, the first vote considered and passed on the House Floor after electing Speaker Johnson was H. Res. 771, a resolution which I proudly cosponsored that expresses our intent to stand with Israel as it defends itself against the barbaric war launched by Hamas and other terrorists. This week, House Republicans and I underscored our commitment by passing H.R. 6126, the Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, to provide additional support to the Israeli defense effort.

ImageI am a proud original cosponsor of this support package for Israel. The Nation of Israel has an unequivocal right to defend itself in the midst of unprovoked attacks. This legislation provides $14.3 billion in emergency supplemental appropriations to bolster Israel’s military capabilities and safeguard American citizens affected by the conflict. The bill includes $4 billion to replenish the Iron Dome and David’s Sling missile defense systems and $1.2 billion for Israel’s Iron Beam system to counteract imminent threats. Additionally, H.R. 6126 allocates $3.5 billion for advanced weaponry and defense services, ensuring Israel’s military readiness against escalating aggression. Finally, it protects U.S. interests, with $200 million allocated for the safety of American personnel and the secure evacuation of U.S. citizens. All of these funds are offset by rescinding $14.3 billion from the funds that the Democrats included for 87,000 new Internal Revenue Service in last year’s Inflation Reduction Act.
As I continue to monitor the situation closely, please know that I am fully committed to supporting the Israeli defense effort and ensuring the safety and security of American citizens. We shall remain steadfast in our pursuit of peace and justice domestic and abroad.

Interior & Legislative Branch Appropriations

This week, House Republicans passed three of the six remaining Appropriations bills needed to fully fund the federal government for Fiscal Year (FY) 2024. Those bills include the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Bill (FY24 T-HUD Appropriations Bill), Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill (FY24 Interior Appropriations Bill), and Legislative Branch Appropriations Bill (FY24 Legislative Branch Appropriations Bill). I was pleased to support each of these bills which rein in excessive spending, cut bureaucratic red tape, and prioritize public safety.

ImageThe FY24 Legislative Branch Appropriations Bill promotes responsible spending and enhances efficiency within Congress, allocating $5.302 billion—a 4.7% decrease in funding from the previous year. This legislation provides for rigorous oversight of the Executive Branch by equipping agencies such as the Congressional Budget Office with the resources necessary for robust operations.

The FY24 Interior Appropriations Bill marks a step toward fiscal responsibility by scaling back discretionary spending to $25.417 billion, constituting a 35% reduction from the President’s Budget request. It implements rigorous cuts to federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), curbing the agency’s overreach. This bill protects vital funding for the Payments in Lieu of Taxes program and wildfire management efforts, critical for East Texas. House Republicans are prioritizing the importance of both accessible energy resources and the responsible stewardship of public lands.

These appropriations bills staunchly deny support for out of control spending and concentrate on essential services and safety measures. Following a dramatic rise in government spending during the COVID pandemic, it is critical that our nation reins in spending and reduces our annual deficit in this year’s appropriations package. I look forward to the passage of the three remaining appropriations bills, and will continue to work with my colleagues to pass full-year appropriations language to responsibly fund the government for the next year.
