Hope on the Hill: Advocates Against Sexual Exploitation Unite on Capitol Hill

Last week, over 250 advocates gathered in Washington, DC for Hope on the Hill!

Hope on the Hill was a special event series in which we strove to influence federal policy makers to pass crucial legislation to end sexual abuse and exploitation. Advocates met with congressional offices, urging them to pass common-sense policy solutions, and we hosted a Congressional Briefing with a powerful panel of lived-experience experts and policy specialists.

This was truly and event that radiated hope and catalyzed change!

This powerful article by a former White House discusses Congress's disappointing failure to pass any legislation for online child protection, "despite the agreement of both major parties, the president, and the large majority of the American population."

In particular, it highlights the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), which we were advocating for on the Hill last week.

One anonymous Trust and Safety employee at a tech corporation is quoted, saying: “What you need to do is actually get on our backs and force us to spend money to protect children online. We could do more. But without pressure, we won’t.”

One in eight [Instagram] users under the age of 16 said they experienced unwanted sexual advances on the platform over the previous seven days... If Meta was to change, Bejar told the Journal, the effort would have to come from the outside."
