Hi there,

On Friday, January 27, 2017, I was less than a month into my first term in Congress and home in Illinois for the weekend when President Trump signed the first Muslim travel ban.

He and I were elected on the same day in 2016, but our backgrounds couldn’t be more different. His campaign targeted immigrants; I immigrated here with my family when I was an infant. The president inherited millions from his father to get his start in business; my family struggled for a time and went on food stamps and into public housing before we got our footing in the U.S. and established ourselves in the middle class.

And, in the first week of his presidency, he abused the power of the office to unconstitutionally attack immigrants and Americans alike, illegally detaining them in airports across the country and leaving them stranded around the globe.

I was the first member of Congress from Illinois to go to O’Hare Airport on that Saturday night to get answers and to fight for the families being held there. Hundreds and hundreds of people came to protest the ban, along with dozens of lawyers who set up an impromptu immigration clinic in the airport lobby. It was one of the most moving demonstrations of what it means to be American that I’ve ever seen.

Friends, we need to keep up that fight.

The ASPIRE team is working tirelessly to unseat GOP members who turn a blind eye to the way this administration has treated immigrants, minorities, and refugees for the last three years. They’re leading a grassroots movement to replace those members of Congress with progressive candidates of color who will take on the extremists on the other side.

But I’m writing you today because donations have slowed this week, and I need your help to keep up the fight.

I’m asking you personally to join me in supporting ASPIRE’s efforts and ensuring that people like Donald Trump, Stephen Miller, and their enablers never get to set American policy again. If you think white nationalism has no place in our country, I’m asking for your donation today. If you agree that a diverse Congress will move our country forward, I’m asking for your donation today. Your support today is the only way we will win.

Here’s the link to give to elect more progressive people of color: [link removed]

I can’t thank you enough for being part of this team.
