Scientists found that rising temperatures are causing different species of animals that don’t normally see each other to interbreed. In Norway, they discovered a hybrid population of Atlantic puffins, showcasing their ability to adapt.
The research shows that this hybrid puffin variety probably came from interbreeding within the last 100 years, which times exactly with rising temperatures seen throughout the 1900s. Unexpectedly, these puffins are the result of a species moving south, rather than north (towards cooler temperatures).
This all goes to show that climate change is creating unique and challenging prospects in the natural world. Animals like puffins have proven to be able to bounce back, but they need the necessary time to do so.
But unfortunately, time is one thing we’re in short supply of when it comes to climate change. We need to slow the pace of climate change in order to give species like the puffin the time they need to adapt.
