$100,000 Matching Gift Challenge
from our Board!
Dear John,
Our End of Year fundraising has been given an incredible boost thanks to a $100,000 matching gift from our Board of Directors. Their generous leadership means every dollar you give will be doubled up to $100,000.
Please double your gift in our End of Year campaign<[link removed]> as we conclude a historic year. 2023 saw the debut of the Seahorse, a 90% reduction in illegal fishing in the Upper Gulf of California, a new coalition with Sea Shepherd Global to end the slaughter of whales and dolphins in the Faroe Islands, and much, much more to come in 2024!

New Program To Help Ensnared Sea Lions
Sea lions the world over get caught in discarded fishing gear and often die as a result. Sea Shepherd is developing a program on the coast of Mexico that identifies, tracks, and removes the deadly ropes and nets from these gentle giants. Sea Shepherd supporters are making this possible, and our goal is to create a model that others can replicate so we can help more sea lions, and also bring this same aid and relief to other species. Stay tuned for more information, and here are some pictures of our early steps in this new animal protection program.

Operation Milagro X Expands; more territory, more species
October 3, 2023 Mexico City: Sea Shepherd and the Mexican government signed a historic endangered species conservation agreement expanding the area of Operation Milagro’s protection of the Vaquita by more than 60%. Operation Milagro protects the Zero Tolerance Area of the UNESCO-recognized Vaquita Refuge from the illegal fishing gear that ensnares and kills the endangered Vaquita. The agreement also expands Operation Milagro’s protection protocols to include the endangered Totoaba across the entire Vaquita Refuge. The expanded partnership extends protection to the west and northwest of the current Zero Tolerance Area to include the areas where the May
2023 Vaquita Survey<[link removed]> identified a significant percentage of the Vaquita sightings. The agreement also expands Operation Milagro to provide expanded protection for the threatened Totoaba.
Coming up in November: Sea Shepherd delegations are heading to the CITES meeting in Geneva and the Parliament of the EU to strengthen our campaigns to protect endangered marine wildlife. Sea Shepherd successfully petitioned for observer status at CITES, which is the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, and from Nov 6-10 our delegation will represent our conservation efforts on the Vaquita and Totoaba to the international community. Sea Shepherd will advocate for the continued monitoring of the vaquita habitat to ensure that it is a gillnet free zone and on November 30, we will join with Sea Shepherd Global to host a Stop The Grind coalition event at the European Union’s Parliament. In addition to engaging elected officials and other NGOs, we will map out the 2024 campaign strategy to end the senseless slaughter of whales and dolphins in the Faroe Islands.
