Friends,

I write to you today with a heavy heart as our nation grapples with yet another horrifying mass shooting, this time in Maine.

Last Wednesday, 18 people were massacred and 13 others were wounded in yet another senseless act of violence. In the wake of this tragedy, the victims and their families are in our prayers. But prayers alone will not solve the gun violence epidemic gripping our nation.

Friends, this marks the 37th mass shooting in the U.S. this year. It has become a tragic normal in our country – these heart-wrenching moments of loss, followed by a period of mourning, and then, for many, a return to normalcy. But normalcy in a nation where mass shootings have become routine is not normal at all.

This has to stop.

We need to build on the progress of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act by passing more comprehensive and sensible gun safety measures that protect the rights of responsible gun owners while keeping firearms out of the hands of those who would use them for harm. We need robust mental health support and services to address the root causes of violence and provide help to those who need it most.

The time for action is now. We can and must come together as a community, as a nation, and say enough is enough. Let us honor the memory of those lost in this tragedy by working together to ensure that no family has to suffer the heartbreak that their families have endured again.

Together, we can end the cycle of tragedy by building a future where mass shootings are a thing of the past.

Thank you,

Lori Trahan
