General Eric Smith, the Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, suffered a heart attack a few days ago. Because of Tuberville’s blockade, he was working both the #1 and #2 jobs in the Marine Corps in the most complex and fast moving threat environment we have seen in years.

The Marines are a force of more than 170,000 Active Duty, and more than 30,000 Reservists. Many of them are deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean in Naval carrier strike groups as we speak. In harm’s way.

And when Tuberville was asked whether his blockade on promotions contributed to General Smith’s heart attack, Tuberville insulted the honor and service of every Marine. “Come on, give me a break. I did that for years.”

Sorry, what? Tommy, you were a college football coach. Get a grip. And get out of the damn way.

The GOP is at their breaking point on this. Three Republican Senators took to the floor to try to force unanimous consent on more than 60 promotions two days ago, and Tuberville blocked each of them. More cracks will come.

It is vital we keep up the pressure. We can’t let this go — not after all the work we have done, not when we have come so far, and not when we are so close to getting these officers confirmed.
