The situation for the more than 2 million people trapped in the Gaza Strip is catastrophic. 8,800 have been killed with close to 70% of the fatalities being women and children. More than 22,200 people have been injured.

But we have an encouraging update: A border crossing linking Egypt with the Gaza Strip has temporarily opened to allow a limited number of people including critically wounded refugees to enter Egypt — where UNFPA is stockpiling life-saving reproductive health supplies, Dignity Kits, and more critical, lifesaving aid.

The health care system is in tatters. Patients lie on the floor and in corridors. Surgeons are operating without anesthesia. Since the start of hostilities, over one-third of hospitals in Gaza and nearly two-thirds of primary health care clinics have shut down due to damage or lack of fuel, increasing the pressure on the remaining health facilities that are still operational.

The Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital — Gaza’s only cancer treatment hospital — has suspended operations as fuel has run out.

That’s why UNFPA remains focused on getting life-saving reproductive health supplies into Gaza. These health kits save the lives of pregnant women — they are as vital as food, water, shelter.

UNFPA continues to support reproductive health services by distributing hygiene kits in 49 shelters in south Gaza, delivering medications for pregnant women, supporting counseling services via an emergency helpline, and more lifesaving interventions.
