** Multifaceted Fight to Protect Northwest Indiana ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
ELPC’s Northwest Indiana Air, Parks, and Water Protector Project is making progress on many fronts. In the case against Fulcrum Centerpoint’s proposed garbage-to-jet fuel facility in Gary, it became clear this month that the company has been talking a lot of hot air. Fulcrum defaulted on its bonds at its Sierra, Nevada location and put its Gary plan to issue $500 million in tax-exempt bonds on hold. As GARD member Carolyn McCrady said, whenever Gary residents have “questioned the feasibility of this project… Fulcrum has said we should look to its Sierra plant as a successful example… Well now we know. They have not produced fuel at scale and cannot pay back their investors. This is just an ill-gotten venture that is bad for Indiana taxpayers and should be abandoned.”
ELPC serves as a watchdog for proposed industry and existing facilities as well. We’re calling on the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to enact stronger water standards ([link removed]) at Cleveland-Cliffs’ East Chicago facilities, in order to protect clean water in Lake Michigan. We’re working with the Environmental Integrity Project to submit detailed comments, gathering emails from everyday Hoosiers, and calling on IDEM for more time for public comment as well.

** Swapping Coal for Renewables in Michigan ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
ELPC's Power Plants to Parklands project celebrated a clean energy win this month. Consumers Energy will install 85+ megawatts of solar energy generation on the former D.K. Karn coal plant site. This clean energy replaces fossil fuel generation, reducing pollution and advancing climate solutions while creating green jobs.

** Planting Vegetative Buffers to Protect Schools from Traffic Pollution ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
ELPC, the Morton Arboretum, Packaging Corporation of America volunteers, students, and teachers planted trees in late October on Chicago's south side. The dense planting of trees and bushes - known as a vegetative buffer - can physically block pollution from the Dan Ryan Expressway across the street, and filter out some harmful particles as they pass through and accumulate on leaf surfaces. This is just one of many ways we’re working to protect public health and improve air quality.

** Protecting Michigan’s Right to Regulate Manure ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
ELPC joined nearly a dozen environmental groups in filing a “friend of the court” brief to protect clean water in Michigan. We urged the MI Supreme Court to reverse a state appellate court ruling that effectively handcuffs the environmental agency (EGLE)'s ability to safegauard Michigan’s waters from pollution caused by industrial livestock operations.
