Global anxiety about the outbreak of the coronavirus has led to the spread of misinformation and scapegoating. In schools and communities in the U.S., we have seen incidents of bias, harassment, bullying, exclusion and xenophobia against Chinese people and those who are perceived as being Chinese. ADL Welcomes New Law Expanding Hate Crime Protections in Virginia
After years of advocacy, and with the unwavering support of Attorney General Mark Herring, Senate Majority Leader Richard L. Saslaw, Speaker of the House Eileen Filler-Corn, lead legislative sponsors Delegates Plum and Bagby, and Senator Boysko, the Commonwealth of Virginia has taken a critical step to ensure its hate crime laws are fully inclusive – covering crimes in which a victim is targeted due to any protected, immutable characteristic. At a time when hate crimes against the LGBTQ community and individuals with disabilities are on the rise, these safeguards are essential. This law sends a clear message that all are entitled to feel safe, welcomed and included in Virginia.

Domestic Extremists Killed At Least 42 People in 2019
An ADL report released last week stated that in 2019 domestic extremists killed at least 42 people in the U.S. in 17 separate incidents. This number makes 2019 the sixth deadliest year on record for domestic extremist-related killings since 1970. The gunman who shot and killed 22 people in August 2019 at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, accounted for more than half of them.

Five Alleged Atomwaffen Members Arrested for Swatting, Intimidation
On February 26, authorities arrested five members of

Atomwaffen Division , including former Texas state Atomwaffen leader John Cameron Denton. These are just the latest detentions of the neo-Nazi group, whose active membership has been decimated in the last two years by a steady stream of federal charges and arrests. Their reported targets included journalists and two individuals associated with ADL.
