John, this is a big win for labor rights.
Three landmark measures that will create jobs were passed by President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress: the CHIPS and Science Act, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Jobs have already been created by these legislative achievements, and more are expected to follow; over the next ten years, the IRA alone is expected to provide more than 9 million jobs.
We need to make sure that any new clean economy employment created by this legislation is well-paying and unionized.
Unionized workers earn 20% more than their non-unionized counterparts, and their jobs perform better in terms of compensation, benefits, and workplace safety. They also reduce wealth disparities based on race and gender by organizing for better pay, job security, and training opportunities. In order to guarantee that marginalized workers receive strong labor standards and protections, unions are essential.
Employers can also experience benefits when their employees are unionized. When businesses fulfill labor requirements for building sustainable energy projects, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) compensates them with tax credits totaling millions of dollars.
