Dear friend,

Coffee and avocados may not seem like an obvious pairing on the table, but
together they are helping grow new possibilities for women coffee farmers
like Relita in Indonesia.

Relita’s avocado trees provide important shade for her coffee plants.
Growing these two crops together is one of the techniques she learned at a
Mercy Corps training to help boost coffee production on her family’s farm.

In Indonesia, climate change has made flooding, high tides, and storms
increasingly unpredictable and severe. Read about Mercy Corps’ work with
farmers, in particular women farmers, to build climate resilience in
Indonesia.

Relita attended a Mercy Corps training to help support her family’s coffee
farm. She is also a university student and hopes to own her own business
one day.

Between 20-30 percent of coffee cultivation in Indonesia is managed by
women, and 70 percent of workers are women. Yet, in a field dominated by
men, the needs of women are often ignored. Mercy Corps is working with
women to:

Provide health education and improved water, sanitation, and hygiene
facilities.

Increase economic resilience of women coffee farmers and improve
financial inclusion through strengthening women’s banking agents.

Expand economic opportunity for women through agricultural and
business training.

Relita says the training she attended provided valuable information about
how to make natural fertilizers from grass, raising livestock, and
boosting coffee production. She also learned about drying and processing
coffee, as well as different types of coffee that can grow in the region.
The knowledge she’s gained has helped increase production on her family’s
farm.

Our teams, communities we work
with, and people like you are working together to provide the resources,
tools, and bold ideas that build up communities and reshape the world we
share. Thank you for being part of our community.

Sincerely,

The Mercy Corps team
